International Day of People with a Disability ( IDPwD)
Flag Planting- A Pathway of Support
3rd December 2010- Time 10.00 am- 12.00 noon
In
support of the International Day for People with Disability, Elouera Special
School will be hosting it’s 2nd Annual Flag Planting (A Pathway
of Support) along The Captains Walk in Jubilee Park Cootamundra NSW.
Community
members, schools and local businesses are invited to sign a flag and plant it
along the Captains Walk pathway, in support of people with disabilities in the
local area.
The event
will commence with a short opening address at 10.00am on Friday 3rd
December 2010 and conclude at 12.00 noon with a barbecue lunch in the park.
There is no
cost for planting a flag.
A sausage
sandwich and can of drink will be available for a gold coin donation after the
event.
A
Free water bottle or tote bag will be distributed to participants on the
day.
In 2009 one
hundred and forty (140) flags were planted, well beyond our expectations for a
first event. Our goal for 2010 is to increase this to at least 200 flags.

This is the
second
year Elouera Special School will host this event. We are hoping to make it
an annual event and our goal is to plant flags further down the pathway
each year. This will equate to more support each year as more people find
out about our event.

About IDPwD
International Day of
People with Disability (IDPwD) is a United Nations sanctioned day that aims to
promote an understanding of people with disability and encourage support for
their dignity, rights and well-being. IDPwD also seeks to increase awareness
of the benefits of the integration of people with disability in every aspect
of political, social, economic and cultural life.
IDPwD brings together
people with disability, community organisations, businesses, individuals and
all levels of government. IDPwD unites people around the world in celebrating
and acknowledging the contributions, skills and achievements of people with
disability.
In 1992, at the conclusion of the United Nations Decade of Disabled Persons
(1983-1992), the General Assembly proclaimed 3 December as the International
Day of Disabled Persons.
Based on feedback from the disability sector, the Australian Government has
adopted the name International Day of People with Disability.
Since 1996, the Australian Government has provided funds to promote and raise
awareness of IDPwD around Australia, through the Department of Families,
Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA).
